Surely everyone knows that one person who is almost totally challenged when it comes to knowledge about the latest technology gadgets or trends, normally the type of person that hands you a good old Floppy Disc when you ask for that urgently needed files or personal data. Yes, although next to what can almost be called Ancient, there are still people out there that use them. We at IB are for those people as well, for that is why we must take a closer look on why its vital to allow the adaptation of a good change in our daily preference when it comes to what, when and where to make use of the tech that is at our disposal, especially since its getting easier, more affordable and much more practical every day.
Often used for the same purposes for which floppy Discs or CDs were once used, like storage or data backup and the transfer of computer files, USB’s or Memory sticks has all the expediencies that can be expected from modern day technology, by using less power, not having any fragile moving parts and for most measurements, being small and light, making it easy to carry around or put away. The data that are stored is impervious to mechanical shock, magnetic fields, scratches and dust… it’s a type of data storage device that includes flash memory with an integrated USB interface. It’s also known as a USB, flash or thumb drive, pen drive, jump drive, disk key, disk on key, or memory stick.
We even have specially manufactured ones with a tough rubber or metal casing designed to be almost waterproof and virtually “unbreakable”! Kind of hard to compare such a “seemingly” small and insignificant invention to what used to be used to store data or memory. Like the physical act of either making drawings on cave walls, the well-received method of writing it down, hoping that the good old Floppy Disc comes to the rescue or relying on your little ones NOT to scratch the CD.
These flash drives retain their memory after being submerged in water, and even through a machine wash. Leaving such a flash drive out to dry completely before allowing current to run through it has been known to result in a working drive with no future problems. Channel Five's (UK) Gadget Show cooked one of these flash drives with propane, froze it with dry ice, submerged it in various acidic liquids, ran over it with a jeep and fired it against a wall with a mortar. A company specializing in recovering lost data from computer drives managed to recover all the data on the drive. All data on the other removable storage devices tested, using optical or magnetic technologies, were destroyed. Some even allow up to 100,000 write/erase cycles, depending on the exact type of memory chip used, and are thought to last between 10 and 100 years under normal circumstances.
Ok, ok, we’re not claiming that this is the next best thing since sliced cheese, just that it’s no longer needed to struggle with the old, but needed to welcome the new, for since the invention of the wheel, it only got better. This is simply just another invention, doing what all inventions are intended for, and that is making it better, simpler and easier for us to use. So, does it really matter to be on top with the latest gadgets and trends?
