The Origin of Branding and Logos
So, what, why and where? The term branding comes from an Old Norse word, ‘’BRANDR ‘’ which means to burn. Well that sounds simple enough… The concept was primarily to depict ownership via a hot iron rod, bent according to the owner’s specifications, using it to burn in an image on certain belongings that had value, but taking the name away and looking at the meaning of the actual deed in the sense that the aim was to mark, able or imprint something or in some cases, someone as a belonging.
Only in the 1800’s, with commerce thru brand and logo design, did the transition of branding evolve from “This belongs to me, so leave it” to “This was made by me, so buy it”, thus creating a brand or in some cases a logo to distinguish and establish itself as unique. Today, it is still all around us. From the smallest utensil having its representing company logo on, hence the start in creating its own unique brand, to big billboards advertising the brand that you “simply can’t live without”. The goal, however, has clearly always been to create one’s own story and mythology, from the brand being merely a decorative illustration or the logo being a mere ownership stamp. So when can we confidently claim did branding originate and form a part of our evolution? Well, since man started…
Since the dawn of our time, branding and logo design has actually been a big part of our existence and our nature to distinguish, mark, claim or represent. Sounds histrionic, doesn’t it? So, can we state that from cavemen drawing pictures on cave walls, of the wonders they saw and using it as a waypoint or even a map for those who would follow, thus actually creating their own prehistoric type of logo? To coins dating as far back to ancient times, sometimes bearing an image of a face sporting a laurel wreath, to the knights of old, with their shields and armour bearing a sign or symbol to represent their allegiance, while flocking to the banner of their ruler? Why not…? Certainly, we can walk the path thru history…From cattle barons branding their livestock to distinguish theirs from their competitors, to a simple initial put on a handkerchief by a loved one to claim possession of the one carrying it, the need to claim, mark or imprint has been a part of our human nature and even forms a big part of our identity.
We at IB get this. Not only do we grip the concept of someone wanting to create their own unique product, we understand in full that it’s absolutely necessary to distinguish ourselves and our ideas from the rest, making it our own in the form of a specific brand. Something we can take pride in and use to spread our vision to the masses, making it a way of business and life. Branding, for that matter, is not only a way to claim, mark or represent, but can also be used as a tool to establish one’s own legacy in making a concept lasting…So why? To leave a legacy and be remembered for that one brilliant idea that we took from a mere thought and gave it life and existence in the form of our own unique brand.
