When, Why & How - Golf Shirts For Sports and Office - A little History/Advice
So why golf/polo/tennis shirts and where did it start?
Well, we are going to take the long way round to answer this question. Let’s go back to when we as humans “knew” that the earth is the center of the universe, and we “knew” beyond contestation that the earth is flat. Yes this is very far back, and no they didn’t have golf shirts back then. However we are always convinced that what we are doing now, or the way we see things now, is the only way and the truth. But this isn’t always the case, as you can see with just two examples mentioned above. As we “know” now, the sun is the center of our universe and the earth is actually round, so you cannot sail off the edge. What we are trying to say with this is that most people will just accept what is laid out in front of them and never question it, but then…someone comes along and looks at the entire story differently, these people in the beginning are often frowned upon and even persecuted, but they spark a change in human thinking that changes the world as we know it, even if it isn’t in their life time.
Yes we know this is an extreme way to open a simple article about branded golf shirts, but what was mentioned above is exactly what happened with this. It might sound insignificant but one person that was willing to swim upstream and question things, made something that was viewed as the right way, to now being utterly outdated, and these types of shirts are now being used in tennis, golf and more for over 60 years. And that’s why the decision was made to write about something like a Golf shirt. A form and style of shirt that withstood and overcame a stigma of worthy and accepted clothing ware, by going against the norm, fashioning a piece of clothing that is not only aimed to suit the onlooker, but designed for the comfort and style of the wearer, whether on the sport field or even in the office.
So where did the “Golf Shirt” start?
Starting from sports like tennis in the late 19th and early 20th century, where their accepted and proper tennis attire was a long-sleeved white button shirt, with a fairly uncomfortable starch collar, but then finally changed and altered by a seven-time Grand Slam French champion, who took away these unpractical qualities, turning it into a much more comfortable and yet versatile, short-sleeved, loosely knit shirt, with still a protruding collar and the all famous ‘’tennis tail’’ back design, Golf shirts have surely made it far in standing out as the popular and all rounding piece of clothing that it is today.
Polo players also started seeking out a more practical and comfortable solution to their thick and warm, long sleeved and one-ply ribbed knit cotton collar shirts, made from a type of woven fabric that was used as a casual-to-formal type of cloth, called Oxford cloth.
Guess riding around on a horse and dangerously swinging a Polo stick, or sorry, a Polo Mallet for that matter, while wearing this, could not have been an easy or a very pleasant task and soon these players of the “Sport of Kings” adapted to this new revolutionary design of sportswear, making it quite easy to understand why Golf players laid claim and basically took ownership of this design in later years, bringing forth to what we all know today as a versatile and comfortable piece of clothing, worn by all, with its collar that is still handy against a warm sun or chilly breeze and its different designs making it a shirt that both fits for outdoor and indoor use. While some designs still support the idea of having a pocket on the left side for holding the scorecard and a pen, today we have such a wide variety of designs of this popular shirt and most of its original qualities and features have been kept, like the 3 to 4 button placket that extend lower than the typical Polo neckline or the collar that is fabricated using a stitched double layer of the same fabric used to make the shirt. The pocket however, had to give way to the new era of keeping score, thus fewer Golf shirts will be seen sporting one, making it even more sporty and fashionable, bringing us to the point that swimming with the stream can sometimes withhold us from an easier and more comfortable lifestyle. It’s hard to believe that a common change in style like a golf shirt has come so far and done so much in making it the popular and acceptable choice of clothing ware that it is today, proving that no matter what the challenge, if we dare to accept change, we can revel in the new found fruits of our challenging nature.
